There Is No Single 'Best' Machine—It Depends on What You’re Actually Making
I manage purchasing for a 50-person manufacturing shop. We do contract work—prototypes, small batches, some custom one-offs. Over the last five years, I've placed orders for everything from a Bodor laser cutter for sheet metal to evaluating SLS 3D printers for a client who needed complex nylon parts. Every time someone asks me, "What's the best machine?" my answer is the same: it depends.
This isn't a cop-out. The reality is that the right choice shifts based on your production volume, material needs, and—most importantly—your deadline. I’ve made bad decisions by chasing the lowest upfront cost. I’ve also overpaid for capability I didn’t need. So let’s break this down by the three most common scenarios I see.
Scenario A: You Need Consistent, Repeatable Metal Parts (And You Have a Regular Workflow)
If you're cutting steel or aluminum every week, a dedicated fiber laser is your best bet. We bought a Bodor laser cutter two years ago, and it’s been a workhorse. The key advantage isn't just speed—it's the repeatability. Once we dial in the settings for a 3mm steel sheet, we can run the same job a month later and get identical results.
What surprised me was the cost of consumables. When I first priced out a Bodor laser cutter, I only looked at the machine price. Then I realized we'd need nozzles, lenses, and protective windows regularly. Budgeting for Bodor laser consumables is essential. Scenario B: You’re a Mixed Shop—Laser, CNC, Maybe Even 3D Printing
This is where things get complicated. I get a lot of questions like "How expensive is CNC machining?" alongside "Should I get a cheap flying fiber laser marking machine?" The answer depends on what you're marking vs. what you're machining.
For marking—serial numbers, logos, barcodes on metal or plastic—a cheap flying fiber laser marking machine can actually be a great entry point. We bought one last year for about $3,500. It's not as fast as a $10,000 model, but for marking batches of 100–500 parts, it does the job. SLS 3D printers are great for prototypes, but production costs can be deceptive. The material cost is higher per pound than laser cutting, and you need post-processing (sanding, dyeing). We ultimately decided to outsource that job to a service bureau.
This scenario works for shops that do a variety of work and can afford to have multiple tools. If you're on a tight budget, Scenario C might be more realistic.
Scenario C: You’re a Small Shop or Startup—Minimal Budget, Maximum Flexibility
If I had to start over with a limited budget, I'd focus on one versatile machine and outsource the rest. A Bodor laser cutter is a solid choice if you mainly work with sheet metal. But if you're doing mixed materials, a plasma cutter or a waterjet might be more cost-effective.
I've seen people buy a cheap flying fiber laser marking machine thinking it could replace a CNC mill. It can't. The marking machine is for surface work only. For actual cutting or 3D machining, you still need a proper mill or router.
Our biggest cost mistake early on was not factoring in tooling and setup time. - What is my primary material? Metal? Plastic? Mixed? This dictates whether laser, CNC, or 3D printing makes sense.
- What is my typical batch size? One-offs? 100 parts? 10,000? Laser and CNC favor repetition; 3D printing favors complexity without tooling cost.
- What is my lead time? If you need parts tomorrow, you pay a premium. If you can wait a week, you have more options.
I can only speak to my experience as a mid-size buyer with predictable ordering patterns. If you're a seasonal business with demand spikes, the calculus might be different. But for most small-to-mid manufacturers, Scenario A or C will apply. Scenario B is for those who already have a base load of work and want to expand capabilities.
The bottom line: don't buy a machine on price alone. Think about the total cost of ownership—including consumables, downtime, and operator time. And when you're in a pinch, remember that paying for certainty (like rush delivery on Bodor parts) is often cheaper than the cost of missing a deadline.
