1. Define the part geometry: 2D vs. 3D

Laser cutting is a 2D process. It can cut profiles, holes, and shapes out of sheet or plate. CNC machining is subtractive in three dimensions—it can create pockets, bosses, threads, counterbores, and complex surfaces. If your part is a flat bracket, a laser cutter can handle it. If it needs a cylindrical boss or an internal thread, you need CNC.

4. Match tolerance to the actual need

Laser cutting today can hold around ±0.005" on sheet metal. CNC turning can hold ±0.001" or better, depending on material and diameter. But tighter tolerance costs money. If the part is a simple bracket, you don't need CNC tolerances. If it's a mating shaft, you can't use laser tolerance.

Don't let a CAD model define reality. I've seen drawings with a ±0.002" tolerance on a hole that only locates a cable tie. The customer paid $1,200 extra because nobody questioned it. The transparent vendor will ask you "is this tolerance really required?" That's a good sign.

5. Think about rush orders and contingencies

This is my world. Last quarter, a client needed 60 anodized aluminum brackets for a trade show booth. Normal delivery for CNC machining was 4 business days. We had 48 hours. 7. Ask about the machine and process, not just the price

For aluminum sheet, fiber lasers are the standard. For thick carbon steel, plasma or CO2 laser might be used. For precision holes, CNC. The machine type affects edge quality and heat-affected zone. Ask: "Is this a fiber laser? Which laser head? What's your cutting gas pressure?" Also ask about quality checks—do they inspect first articles? Do they provide a material certificate with the shipment? The One-Question Distraction: Cardboard

You might be wondering: "Can you cut cardboard with a laser cutter?" You can. A CO2 laser with around 30–40 watts cuts corrugated cardboard quickly. But if your goal is metal parts, that question is a detour. A fiber laser like a Bodor laser machine is built for metal, not cardboard. It can technically mark or cut non-metal in some cases, but it's expensive and inefficient for cardboard. Use the right machine for the material.

Common Mistakes That Turn Cheap Quotes Expensive

  • Comparing base prices without transportation. A quote that looks 30% cheaper can double in cost when freight and crating are added.
  • Assuming the proof represents the final product. I learned never to assume that after receiving a batch that looked nothing like the approved sample. Ask for a first article inspection.

When I'm triaging a rush order, I don't call the cheapest name. I call the shop that answered every question in this checklist. They're the ones who deliver on time—or tell you honestly when they can't. That honesty is worth more than any machine brand or hourly rate.
