If you're the person who signs the purchase order, the laser machine demo is the easy part. The hard part is figuring out what happens after the crate arrives—and whether the machine earns its keep across your actual part mix. This checklist is for anyone evaluating a Bodor laser cutter or welder, especially operations that also deal with CNC-milled power plant components or heavy fabrications like ball mill inlet end covers.

Step 1: Verify how laser welding stacks up against MIG for your joints
The question “is laser welding as strong as MIG” deserves a straight answer: it depends. I don't have hard data on industry-wide weld failure rates, but after six years of reviewing test coupons and field repair reports, the failures I've seen come from the wrong process for the material thickness and fit-up—not from the machine brand.
Laser welding puts heat into a narrow area, so for thin material it can actually be stronger than a MIG weld with poor penetration or cold lap. MIG still wins on thick sections (think 10 mm and above) and on joints with variable gaps, because the filler wire helps bridge imperfect fit-up.
So do what we did: weld test coupons in your own material, with your typical edge prep, and send them for bend testing. It cost us around $400 in lab fees. That's nothing compared to re-testing after installation.
Checklist: Write down your thickest joint and your worst typical gap. If those numbers are outside the comfortable range, keep MIG in the building. Basically, laser welding complements MIG; it does not replace it.

Bodor laser reviews are easy to find. Useful ones are not. I filter for comments that include a cost or a timeline. “The machine tripped the breaker” becomes useful only when someone adds “and we lost two shifts while the electrician upsized the feed.”
I ignore general ratings when the reviewer's application is too different from ours. A shop cutting 1 mm sheet metal and a maintenance workshop repairing ball mill inlet end covers live in different worlds. If you're involved in CNC milling for power plant components, search for feedback from heavy fabricators, not light-gauge job shops.
What I look for in Bodor laser reviews:
- Long-term consumable cost comments, not just “cheap machine”

People think expensive machines last longer and cheaper machines fail sooner. In my experience, the causation runs the other way: a vendor who has a solid spare parts network can charge more, because the reduced downtime justifies the premium.

A laser is only as good as its consumables. Before you sign, ask for the full spare parts list for the exact model you're considering: nozzles, ceramic rings, protective windows, focus lenses, and mirrors. Then ask three questions:

- Are there compatible third-party Bodor laser parts that do not void the warranty?
During our 2024 evaluation, one supplier sent a 14-page parts PDF without being asked. This is where purchase decisions usually go sideways. People buy a machine because of a brochure spec, and then spend months hunting for parts that justify it. Flip the process: list your current parts first, and let that list define the investment.
In our shop, a meaningful part of the workflow is CNC milling for power plant components—wear plates, flanges, brackets, and the occasional odd-shaped coupling. One maintenance item that comes up is whether to buy ball mill inlet end cover replacements or make them in-house. A ball mill inlet end cover is a heavy fabrication with a machined face and a drilled bolt circle. A laser cutter can shape the plate and help with weld prep, but the real production time sits in the milling machine and the drill press.
If your mix looks like that, a laser won't fix a milling bottleneck. The honest calculation is:
- What does the component cost to purchase? For many shops, buying a ball mill inlet end cover is the right call.

The last time we evaluated a fiber laser, we compared four suppliers and found the hardware price varied by around 35% for the same nominal power. But after adding freight, rigging, electrical work, tooling, and installation, the spread closed to under 12%. Over five years of consumables and maintenance, the cheapest initial quote was not the cheapest total solution.
Build a TCO sheet (total cost of ownership, not just the invoice) with at least these lines:
- Freight and rigging
- Electrical work, compressed air, floor prep
- First-year tooling and spare parts
- Operator training and lost production during the learning curve
- Monthly consumable cost, based on realistic production volume
- Annual maintenance time or contract
- Estimated unscheduled downtime, in hours per year
- Conservative resale value after five years
I wish I had done this in 2022. A low upfront quote on another machine turned into a $4,000 surprise in rigging and electrical work. Since then, I refuse to look at any equipment quote without a TCO sheet. It takes an hour to build and saves you from the classic “low sticker price” trap.
There is something satisfying about watching all the bids line up in one spreadsheet and seeing the honest option rise to the top. After the sales calls and the glossy brochures, the numbers make the decision for you.
Checklist: If the supplier cannot provide installation costs and electrical requirements in writing before the PO, ask why. If they still cannot, hire a third party to estimate it.
Last thing: common mistakes to avoid
I have made some of these. I have also watched other buyers repeat them.
- Skipping the destructive weld test. Your application will not match the YouTube video.
- Assuming laser welding replaces MIG. It does not for heavy sections, poor fit-up, or field repairs.
- Buying the biggest watts because the monthly payment looks manageable. If your material is 3–6 mm, a 12 kW machine is wasted capacity.
- Trusting “we have parts in stock” without a part number list and lead times.
- Forgetting that a ball mill inlet end cover may be cheaper to buy than to make, no matter how good your new laser is.
So, is laser welding as strong as MIG? For thin material and tight fit-up, yes, if you set it up properly. For heavy fabrication and sloppy gaps, no—MIG still owns that territory. The smart purchase is the one that knows the difference before the crate arrives.
